Alan, class of 2017

Challenges before coming to YBLC:

Alan was challenged with adult responsibilities when he became a single parent at a young age. Like many of our students, Alan faced roadblocks while trying to balance his responsibilities. Amidst his struggles, he was looking for a career path in construction and needed a starting point to move towards his goals.

Success at YBLC:

Alan was actively involved during his time at YouthBuild when he became a member of the YBLC youth policy council. Due to his successes throughout his time here, he received the first annual Zoro/YBLC achievement award. He also completed 756 hours of community service through the AmeriCorps program.

Since YBLC:

Alan has been working full-time at the Blinderman Construction Company and has begun training as a member of the Carpenter’s Local Union 181. Although he has achieved a career in construction, he continues to work hard each day to reach beyond his initial goals. Through YBLC, he has expanded his responsibilities and is consistently working towards a positive future.

Advice to other students:

Don’t give up just because there is an obstacle; the fulfilling outcome will be worth the struggle.
